Reiki FAQ: Common Questions about Reiki in Hyderabad

Answers to the questions people most often ask about Reiki and about sessions with Grandmaster Srilatha at Latha Reiki Healing.

About Reiki

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese practice used mainly for relaxation and stress relief. The practitioner acts as a channel for what the tradition calls universal life force energy ("Ki"), guided by spiritual wisdom ("Rei"), traditionally with light touch or at a distance. All of Srilatha's sessions are distance sessions.

For more detail, see the What is Reiki? page.

Is there scientific evidence for Reiki?

There is some peer-reviewed research, but it is still early. Energy healing is hard to study well, and the U.S. NCCIH says clearly that Reiki has not been proven to treat any specific condition. With that in mind, these studies are worth knowing about:

  • Placebo-controlled trials: A 2017 systematic review by McManus in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine examined 13 placebo-controlled trials and found 8 reported Reiki to be more effective than placebo (McManus, 2017).
  • Anxiety: A 2024 meta-analysis pooling 824 participants found Reiki significantly reduced anxiety (SMD −0.82; 95% CI −1.29 to −0.36; p=0.001) (Guo et al., 2024).
  • A larger study without a control group: A 2019 single-group study of 1,411 Reiki sessions (Dyer, Baldwin & Rand), without a control group, recorded significant improvements in anxiety, depression and well-being (all p<0.001) (Dyer et al., 2019).
  • Quality of life: A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials covering 661 participants reported a significant improvement in quality of life (Liu et al., 2025).
  • Use in hospitals: Cleveland Clinic notes that Reiki is used in medical centres across the United States and around the world, alongside conventional care.

So the early evidence is promising but not conclusive. That is why Reiki should be used alongside medical treatment, not instead of it. The What is Reiki? page goes into this further.

Is Reiki a religion? Do I need to believe in it?

No. Reiki is not a religion and has no creed. People of any faith, or none, can receive it. It is spiritual in the sense that it works with the idea of a universal life force and aims at inner peace.

Practitioners say you don't need to believe in it. Being willing to relax does help.

What are the Five Reiki Principles?

The Five Reiki Principles, taught by Mikao Usui, are simple guidelines for daily life. Many practitioners recite them every day. They are:

  • Just for today, do not anger.
  • Just for today, do not worry.
  • Just for today, be grateful.
  • Just for today, do your work honestly.
  • Just for today, be kind to every living thing.

About Online Distance Reiki Sessions with Grandmaster Srilatha

What happens during a typical Reiki session?

All sessions are online distance Reiki, so you don't need to travel. First there is a consultation with Grandmaster Srilatha to understand what you need and agree the price and timings. At the agreed time you rest at home while she does the Reiki at a distance. Afterwards she tells you what she observed.

People often feel relaxed, warm or tingly, and some see colours. Emotions can come up, which is fine. Some people simply feel calm or fall asleep. There is a longer guide on the blog: Your First Reiki Session: What to Expect.

How long is a Reiki session?

Session timing depends on your needs and is agreed with you during the initial consultation call.

How should I prepare for my session?

Wear something comfortable. Avoid a heavy meal or strong coffee just before. Find a quiet spot at home where you won't be disturbed, and if you like, think about what you would like help with. The blog post on your first session has more tips.

How does distance Reiki work if I'm not physically in Hyderabad?

Distance Reiki, sometimes called absentee healing, is a standard part of Reiki training. In the Reiki tradition, the energy is not limited by physical distance. Grandmaster Srilatha uses Reiki symbols and techniques to send Reiki to you wherever you are. All her sessions are done this way, so you stay at home and don't need to travel.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your request and is discussed with you during the initial consultation. That applies whether you come for stress, a particular goal (see Reiki for Success or Reiki for Relationships), or burnout at work.

What are your session fees?

Sessions start from ₹500 onwards (negotiable), depending on the session. Contact Grandmaster Srilatha for a free consultation and she will confirm the price for your request. There is no obligation to book.

Can Reiki be done on children or pregnant women?

Reiki is gentle and non-invasive, and it is generally considered suitable for people of all ages, including children and pregnant women. Parents sometimes look to it to help a child relax or settle at bedtime, and some pregnant women find it calming. If you are pregnant, tell your doctor about any complementary therapy you use. Discuss your situation with Grandmaster Srilatha in the free consultation.

Chakras and energy

What are chakras, and how does Reiki affect them?

In yogic and Reiki tradition, chakras are energy centres along the centre of the body. There are seven main ones, each linked with different physical, emotional, mental and spiritual parts of life. The tradition holds that stress, upsetting experiences and negative habits can unbalance them.

Practitioners use Reiki to bring the chakras back into balance. There is more on this in the blog post: Chakra Balancing with Reiki.

Is Reiki covered by health insurance in India?

Can Reiki help with specific medical conditions?

Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment. It can sit alongside conventional care. The NCCIH notes that Reiki has been studied for conditions including pain, anxiety and depression, but that most research has not been of high quality and the results have been inconsistent. The clearest findings so far relate to:

  • Anxiety: A 2024 meta-analysis found reduced anxiety in people with chronic conditions and in the general population (Guo et al., 2024).
  • Quality of life: A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials, including people with cancer, surgical patients and those with chronic illness, found a modest improvement in quality of life (Liu et al., 2025).
  • Relaxation: Clients often tell Srilatha they feel more relaxed after sessions, and some have written that they slept better.

Important: Grandmaster Srilatha does not perform Reiki for medical reasons or to treat any medical condition. Always continue with your prescribed medical treatments and consult your physician for any health concerns.

What's the difference between Reiki and meditation or massage?

All three are relaxing, but they work differently:

  • Reiki and meditation: Meditation is something you do yourself to quiet the mind. In Reiki, you rest while the practitioner channels energy to you. Some people find Reiki makes it easier to reach a meditative state.
  • Reiki and massage: Massage works on the muscles by hand to release tension. Reiki is traditionally done with light or no touch, and with Srilatha it is done at a distance, with no touch at all. Practitioners see Reiki as working on emotional and spiritual well-being as well as physical.

They can sit well alongside each other. For more on mindfulness, see the NCCIH - Meditation and Mindfulness.
